On Thursday, August 22, 2024, a research group led by Professor Shinji Yamaguchi and Assistant Professor Toshiyuki Fujita of the Teikyo University Faculty Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences discovered that the soxC gene promotes organ regeneration using the highly regenerative earthworm Yamatohime. They also discovered that cells expressing the soxC gene (soxC cells) accumulate at the cut ends of organs in both Yamatohime and Xenopus. soxC cells are thought to be responsible for the early events of organ regeneration across animal species, and since the soxC gene is also present in humans, the findings discovered this time are expected to provide new perspectives on new drug discovery and regenerative medicine in the future.
The results of this research were published in the journal Nature Communications.
