On Saturday, February 1, 2025, the 8th "Creating a Safe Nation" event was held at Teikyo University's Kasumigaseki Campus. This was an extracurricular event for the "Improving Questioning Skills" class being offered at the university's Hachioji Campus. Each time, a guest is invited to hold a workshop where participants discuss various social issues in Japan in order to solve the problems.
This time, the guest speaker was Mr. Hiroomi Ishiwata of the National Institute for Defense Studies, Ministry of Defense, who gave a lecture entitled "Worst Case Scenarios in and around Japan" and gave an overview of Japan's defense and European security based on his experience working not only in the Self-Defense Forces but also at the Japanese Government Mission to NATO. Afterwards, the students gave presentations on the possibility of a Taiwan emergency and the current situation of the Senkaku Islands, which are related to the following discussion.
After each presentation, the participants (21 in total: 9 students, 3 faculty members, and 9 working adults) divided into seven countries: Japan, the United States, China, Russia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and France, and conducted a Model United Nations. There was lively discussion to express their positions of support, opposition, or abstention on the proposed resolution to "urge all countries to refrain from military action in order to prevent the situation from worsening further, in light of the increasing tensions surrounding Taiwan." Mr. Ishiwata said, "Looking at the free and open discussions that took place today, I believe that this increased interest in security will be a driving force to make Japan a safe country."
The "Creating a Safe Nation" activities are run by student volunteers, and past activities can be viewed below.
