On Thursday, March 27, 2025, the "Nation of Lifesavers" cardiopulmonary resuscitation promotion event sponsored by the American Heart Association was held at Teikyo University's Itabashi Campus.
The American Heart Association is a US organization that aims to provide information and resources to save and improve people's lives from cardiovascular disorders and strokes, and is promoting cardiopulmonary resuscitation around the world. "Nation of Lifesavers" is comprised of lectures to convey the importance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and training sessions to actually learn the techniques, with the aim of acquiring the skills to use and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
At the event, in addition to the keynote speech by Dr. Damodhar P. Suresh, an American Heart Association Volunteer International Advisor, there were speeches by Tomokazu Soma, Senior Assistant Professor at the Sports Medicine Center and coach of the Teikyo University Rugby Football Club Club, and the Teikyo University ACLS Study Group, a student group Itabashi Campus. In addition, Teikyo University, which co-hosted the event, and the Japanese Circulation Society and Teikyo University ACLS Study Group, which sponsored the event, were awarded for their long-term contributions to the American Heart Association training.
In the CPR training course, participating students performed a simulation of CPR and the use of an AED under the guidance of a trainer. Using a smartphone app, the students learned more accurate techniques by measuring the quality of chest compressions. At the end of the training, the students were presented with a certificate and badge from the American Heart Association, and they praised their peers for their hard work in performing chest compressions "strongly, quickly, and continuously." Professor Ichiro Kaneko of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the School of Medicine of Tokyo, who served as the moderator of the lecture and training course, commented, "Since 2020, the survival rate from sudden cardiac arrest in Japan has dropped significantly. By teaching and sharing the CPR skills learned in this training course, and by those who have been taught it, we can save more lives. Please spread the knowledge you have gained this time."
Teikyo University is focusing on more practical medical education, including simulation education, in order to cultivate "good medical professionals." Teikyo University will continue to contribute to society at large through its medical and healthcare education and research activities.
