From Wednesday, February 26th to Friday, February 28th, 2025, students in the geography course participated in a field trip in Suwa, Chino, and Okaya cities in Nagano Prefecture as part of a Department of History field trip taught by Associate Professor Junpei Hirano Faculty of Liberal Arts of History, Faculty of Letters, Teikyo University.
The aim of this internship is to understand the nature, culture and history of the Suwa region through fieldwork. With support from the Matsuki Kanten Chojukan Museum, the Okaya Silk Museum and the Yatsugatake Museum, the nine students who participated in this field trip were able to gain an in-depth understanding of the history and current state of an industry rooted in the local climate. Students who participated commented, "I was able to gain a good understanding of how industries unique to the Suwa region have developed by utilizing the natural environment, such as the climate and water, for sericulture and agar production."
The students will use the fieldwork methods they learned this time to further their research in the future.
