Yamane Laboratory participated in the experimental and main runs of Tsukuba Challenge 2025.Utsunomiya Campus

Students from the laboratory of Ken Yamane, Senior Assistant Professor Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Course at the Department Department of Integrated Science and Engineering Faculty of Science and Engineering of Science and Engineering, Teikyo University, and Senior Assistant Professor Yamane participated in the Tsukuba Challenge 2025, which was held at Tsukuba City Hall (Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture) from September to December 2025.
The Tsukuba Challenge involves autonomously driving a mobile robot around the city to discover various issues and refine the technology for social implementation.
Two outdoor autonomous mobile robots, Nexora-Blue and Nexora-Red, participated from our university. Nexora-Blue was developed and tested primarily by Graduate School, while Nexora-Red was developed primarily by students and their supervisors. The robots' greatest feature is their flexible autonomous driving, which allows them to avoid road cones, for example, by learning operator operations on the spot in real time and acquiring driving methods, rather than by programming rules for driving.
Through experimental and actual driving, the students were able to take the lead in developing a robot that can move autonomously in urban environments, and they were able to demonstrate the high potential of learning-based navigation in urban environments. They will continue to conduct research in the future with the aim of realizing a system that can process information intelligently in the real world.
