On Sunday, May 25, 2025, 13 students from Akira Pakui's seminar in the Department of Political Science Faculty of Law, Teikyo University participated in the "Everyone's Town Clean-up Day," a local clean-up activity organized by the Association for Creating a Beautiful Hachioji. This activity was a local event held in conjunction with Kanto Environmental Clean-up Day (Zero Waste Day) on Friday, May 30, and this was the second time that the Pakui seminar participated, following last year, as a field trip to learn about the relationship between environmental policy and local government.
In July, the Pakui seminar plans to conduct a hearing survey with city officials regarding the recycling-oriented urban policy being promoted by Hachioji City, and this cleaning activity was a valuable opportunity to develop a sense of the field as a preparation for that. On the day, they collected trash around Hachioji Campus, and even in areas that usually give the impression of being kept clean, they found trash that seemed to have been thrown out of cars and cigarette butts along the main roads, and the participating students were reminded of the need for etiquette awareness.
Students who participated in the activity commented that "There are issues that can only be seen by being on the ground, and I felt that it is important to have the perspective of the residents when considering policies," making it a very educational experience. In the Pakui seminar, students develop a perspective that grasps the relationship between the government and citizens and the actual situation of policies on the ground through practical activities in the community. In the future, we will continue to further deepen our research and studies on local government from a perspective rooted in the community.
