Philosophy of the Institute
Established in 1931, Teikyo Commercial School, the predecessor of the university, has set the three pillars of "personal pottery," "practical education," and "encouragement of physical education and martial arts" as its educational policy. Toshiro Aki (Lake Mountain) Professor 1911-2006
Teikyo University opened in 1966 while the rate of enrollment in universities increased year by year due to the effects of the postwar baby boom and the period of high economic miracle. Six years after the university opened, Toshiro Aki (Koyama), who retired from Tokyo Gakugei University in 1972, was invited to the Department of Japanese Literature, Faculty of Liberal Arts Letters. Mr. Aki was a leading figure in calligraphy education at that time, and for the university, his appointment dramatically developed the calligraphy education at the university. In 1974, a calligraphy selection course was newly established in the Department of Japanese Literature, and a system of calligraphy education centered on teacher training was established, forming the pillar of the university's calligraphy education that continues to this day. Then, in 1976, 10 years after the opening of the university, Japan was under the intention of the first President, Shoichi Okinaga, in order to make it a distinctive base for differentiating from other universities in the education and research of the university. Teikyo University Research Institute of Calligraphy was founded as the first calligraphy institute. The Calligraphy Institute has set Koyama Akimoto as the first director, and has supervised calligraphy-related subjects at the university, such as calligraphy calligraphy history and calligraphy calligraphy education, and the calligraphy education program in early childhood education in collaboration with Teikyo University Kindergarten. Since its founding in 1976, Teikyo University Research Institute of Calligraphy has devoted itself to the spread and development of calligraphy culture, centering on educational activities at the university. Teikyo Calligraphy, which is the philosophy of calligraphy education at our university, boasts a history and achievements of more than 80 years, even before the university was founded. We aim to continue to grow and develop. In today's society where PCs and smartphones are widely used, opportunities to write letters by hand are decreasing. Precisely because of such times, we believe that the mission of the Calligraphy Research Institute is to promote the spread of calligraphy, including calligraphy, as a university research institute, and to help pass on the tradition and history of Japanese letter culture to future generations. Currently, the Institute focuses mainly on research in the field of Japanese calligraphy, and is promoting collaboration with research from various peripheral disciplines such as Japanese literature and history.
